GEOLOCATE WITH CONFIDENCE

Systematic geolocation techniques to verify image locations using environmental cues, landmarks, shadows, and structured methodologies. Learn to pinpoint where images were taken with defensible accuracy.

EXTRACT EXIF DATA

Extract and interpret EXIF metadata from digital images. Uncover embedded GPS coordinates, camera settings, timestamps, and device information that can validate or contradict claims about an image's origins.

APPLY STRUCTURED ANALYSIS

Develop investigation-focused analysis skills to assess authenticity, identify objects, validate events, and recognize image modification. Learn to work methodically whilst recognizing and mitigating cognitive bias.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course introduces a practical, investigation-focused approach to image and video analysis as part of the wider OSINT workflow. You'll learn to systematically examine visual media to support predefined investigative objectives, rather than relying on intuition or assumption.

Participants will explore how to set clear objectives before analysis begins, assess and interpret available metadata, conduct effective reverse image searches, and apply structured analytical techniques to identify relevant visual indicators. The course also addresses the investigative use of assumptions, the impact of cognitive bias, and the role of tools and tradecraft in strengthening analytical confidence.

The emphasis throughout is on method, verification, and defensible decision-making—essential skills for any OSINT practitioner working with visual media.

ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE

This course takes approximately 4 hours to complete, longer if you choose to all bonus activities. The course is entirely self-paced, allowing you to progress through the material at a time and speed that suits your schedule.

WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR

This course is designed for a wide audience including law enforcement, intelligence analysts and journalists. We think it is an important skill for all OSINT practitioners.

Whether you're investigating online misinformation, conducting due diligence, supporting criminal investigations, or verifying visual content for journalism, this course equips you with systematic approaches to analyze images and video with confidence.

PREREQUISITES

No prior OSINT experience is required. This course is suitable for beginners who want to develop foundational image analysis skills, as well as practitioners seeking to strengthen their systematic approach to visual media verification.

Basic computer literacy is assumed. All tools and techniques covered use free, accessible resources.

Recommended preparation: While not required, OSINT Primer provides useful foundational searching and capture skills, whilst AI Essentials helps you understand the technology behind AI-generated imagery and how AI can assist your investigative workflow. Both courses complement the image analysis techniques covered here.
